This weekend looks to be a great sporting weekend, with the much anticipated Currie Cup Final taking place on Saturday at 17:00 between Western Province and The Lions. It’s been a while since these two teams have met in a final, and it’s sure to be one hell of a game! The Fina World Cup of Swimming in Beijing happens this weekend, so let’s see if the South Africans will continue to make an impact on the international swimming scene and grab a few more medals. There’s also loads of Soccer with British Premier League games, Telkom Knockout and MDC series action.

The big games for this weekend have to be the two Currie Cup semi-finals, with the Lions taking on the Sharks at Ellis Park and Western Province hosting the Bulls at Newlands. All four teams will be giving it their all for a place in the 2014 Currie Cup Final, so Saturday promises to be a good afternoon of rugby. The European Tour plays through the weekend with live coverage from London Golf Club, and the Amsterdam Marathon takes place on Sunday. There’s also some great cricket action today, tomorrow and Sunday, which can only mean one thing, summer is finally here!

The best explanation I’ve ever heard of what qualifies a sport to be a sport is that it is an activity in which one can injure a muscle whilst practicing this activity.  It’s much better than “there has to be a ball” or “if it’s not an art form” or “competitive physical activity”.  This is accurate because all the major sports are included and non-sports like motor racing and horse riding are excluded.  Sure, Gonda has fallen off her horse and tore a ligament and Jodie Scheckter has bumped his head a few times, but by that rationale bungee jumping and suicide should also be a sport.  (Watch

With Leeroy Poulter/Elvéne Coetzee still leading the championships after the halfway mark Volkswagen Rally in Port Elizabeth and surrounds recently, the menacing form of Car 24 - the S2000 Ford Fiesta of Mark Cronjé and Robin Houghton - continues to lurk in the background.

With an overall winning margin of 90 seconds over the second-placed Castrol Toyota Yaris, Cronjé has served notice that he will be going for a third title - to add to his 2012 and 2013 victories.
