Opel Adam Rocks

Image from www.opel.co.za

In an affluent, but quirky, market segment where the iconic Fiat 500C has ruled for a number of years, the launch of the equally fashionable Opel Adam Rocks is set to change buying patterns quite dramatically.  For starters, the Adam Rocks brings robust German build quality to the party, while the Fiat is, well, Italian.

Taming the Namib

Image from www.toyota.co.za

The Namib. One of the oldest deserts in the world with the bleached bones of humans and animals, and the rusted wrecks of ships which came to grief, lying silently in the ever-shifting sands of the desert.

To me, as a born Namibian, this was a homecoming of sorts when I was invited along by Toyota South Africa to evaluate their Land Cruiser LC200 under the most extreme conditions imaginable.

A real coupé - Lexus steps up the pace

Lexus RC 350 F-Sport | Image by Lexus SA

Developed from the ground up as a dynamic coupé, the purpose-built Lexus RC 350 F-Sport has served notice that the German Big Three may have a problem on their hands. Excelling as a dynamic sports coupé, the RC is much more than a two-door derivative of a sedan.   It is said that one should never judge a car without having sat in it.

A legend improved - BMW six generations on

BMW340i review

In what must be regarded as an astonishing achievement, the sixth generation of BMW's popular 3 Series has been given yet another host of improvements with which to continue the legend of this iconic model, which has seen some 14-million sales over the past 40 years. This represents 25 % of all BMW sales since 1975. As BMW AG's all time most popular model, the 3 Series continues to impress and increase in popularity with ongoing mechanical and build improvement without drastic exterior changes, which could have an adverse effect on the pre-owned market.

Handcrafted excellence - Mercedes-Benz AMG-GT

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT | SA Men feature AMG GT

Few car enthusiasts will realise that the happy and mutually productive relationship between Mercedes-Benz and AMG has been in existence for 50 years. In was in 1965 that Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, working for Mercedes-Benz at the time, decided to add some real power to the brand. This was the start of a great relationship which has reached its high point with the recent introduction of the AMG GT - the first model to have been completely developed in-house by AMG in their Affaltersbach hometown. Mechanically, the AMG GT is an exotic jewel.

More power for sporty 3-door Veloster

Hyundai Veloster | Images by Hyundai

Giant Korean motor manufacturer Hyundai has woken up to the fact that sporty-looking cars also need the power to make an impact in the marketplace

Most of us remember, with mixed feelings, Hyundai's previous attempt at building (and selling) a two-door sports coupé. Sadly, the Tiburon, as it was called, was discontinued in 2012 - leaving a fairly large hole in Hyundai's model line up.

Soon thereafter, the company introduced the attractive Veloster, with its slightly underpowered 103 kW 1.6-litre four cylinder petrol engine.

Le Mans 2015 | Images by Porsche | SA Men

The world's greatest sports car endurance race, the La Mans 24 Hours, starts on Saturday at 15:00 at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Battling it out for top honours will be two German cousins - Audi and Porsche - with Audi, which has dominated the event for the last number of years, going all out to retain their title.

Meanwhile Porsche, arguably the world's finest car makers and a regular winner in years gone by, will do everything in their (hybrid) power to upstage the cousins from Ingolstadt.

French giant killer surprises

Peugeot 308 review | Images by Peugeot

With the market awash with small capacity engines, it's becoming increasingly more difficult to find a particularly outstanding version in this cluttered market. The all new Peugeot 308 is, I believe, one of those rare finds - a compact car that feels solid and well built, as well as offering excellent roadholding and interior quality worthy of much pricier brands. Visually, the first impression is that of a modern and roomy mid-sized four door, which has done away with the swoopy, over the top Peugeot styling of the past.

Captivating little Captur

Renault Captur | Images by Renault

The penny (or is that Euro) seems to have dropped for French motoring giant Renault that smaller SUVs are the way to go, and that large, hefty SUVs are no longer the flavour of the day

Not content with their sales success with Duster, a South African 2015 Car of the Year finalist, the French car maker has decided to expand this increasingly popular vehicle segment with an offering that could best be described as a Clio with attitude.
