Toyota in MUST WIN 2017 Dakar

Toyota dakar performance

For Toyota South Africa, as well as for Toyota globally, 2016 will be a year that the company will want to relegate to the dustbin of history. After experiencing mechanical failure three minutes before the end of the Le Mans 24 hour race in what would have been a dramatic victory over Porsche, and after conceding victory in the 2016 Dakar event but still managing a third-place podium, the time has come to step up to the top position.

Suzuki Baleno fills the gap

Image by Bernard K. Hellberg. Olympus OM-D E-M1

Although doing fairly well since its re-entry into South Africa some five years ago, Suzuki has had its ups and downs. Models such as Swift and Jimny sold in fairly decent numbers, while the larger Kizashi (although an excellent vehicle in its own right) was never popular with buyers of medium-sized sedans, and will soon be history in our country.

Quaint Kwid catches the eye

Renault kwid

"What's in a name?" as Shakespeare so famously asked centuries ago. Well, in the case of Renault's recent offering (which in its unpretentious guise must surely be earmarked as a fleet vehicle able to withstand the unsympathetic demands of multiple drivers), the Kwid is one of those ambivalent vehicles which leaves one confused after having sampled it during the recent launch drive.

A tale of two bakkies

Isuzu kb launch review

Unless you are an Italian tourist doing your game viewing in the Kruger from the nether regions of a low-slung white rental sedan, there's really only one way of properly seeing animals in their natural surroundings.

Use an SUV or a double cab bakkie and, better still, get a vehicle with an automatic gearbox which will enable you to cruise along at low and slow speeds so essential for game viewing.

Improving on perfection

Porche Cayman | image by Bernard Hellberg

In the 1950s and 1960s Porsche's 718 race cars took the world by storm, winning such events as the Targa Florio and at Le Mans and thereby paving the way for the relaunch of the proud "718" designation in the latest generation Cayman which, true to tradition, is offered with 4-cylinder engines which blend astonishing performance with legendary Porsche reliability. When the world's most profitable car company launches a new model range, outcomes are predictable as a new future icon hits centre stage.
