Jeep renegade 1.4 L turbo Limited - Italian-American with enhanced cuteness

Jeep renegade

At first glance, I found the Jeep Renegade with its relatively tiny 1.4 turbo engine rather difficult to evaluate. I wondered if this was a real 4X4, or if it was a Suzuki Jimny which had paid a visit to a Russian Olympic team doctor for some size-enhancing chemicals.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider - real car or go-kart?

Alfa romeo

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is a small, lightweight (1050 kg) rear-wheel-drive sports car which makes use of super-expensive manufacturing techniques and exotic materials to keep weight down and price up.

It certainly looks like a compact supercar, and the asking price of R1.34-million seems to be fully justified. But the proof of the pudding, as the saying goes, lies in the overall experience - an experience which, in my view, has many more negatives than positives.

Toyota Corolla 2017 - The Legend keeps getting better

Toyta corolla

Having been part of the South African motoring landscape for more than 40 years, and with one Corolla being built or having been built somewhere in the world every 36 seconds, the Toyota Corolla, surely, must be regarded as one of the most iconic cars ever conceived and built. With an approximately 45-million build in the past 50 years, and with more than a million of these right here in South Africa, the 12th generation continues the tradition of being a reliable, value-for-money sedan that will have clients rushing to dealerships.

Toyota Gazoo racing to field three cars at Le Mans

La mans trophy

Following the heartbreaking 2016 Le Mans when Toyota's effort to win the event ended three minutes before the 15:00 Sunday cutoff while comfortably in the lead, the Japanese carmaker has pulled out all the stops to win this year.

Toyota Gazoo Racing are demonstrating their commitment to the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship, announcing that three TS050 Hybrid cars will be entered for the 2017 Le Mans 24 Hours and the race at Spa-Francorchamps.

Nostalgia in Burnt Orange

image by Bernard K. Hellberg. Olympus OM-D E-M1

Despite South Africans' penchant for large SUV-type vehicles and Double Cabs, there's always space in the marketplace for something smaller, something that sips fuel and is ridiculously easy to park, and still manages to turn heads with its funky retro styling.

This space is currently occupied by the largely unknown yet very competent little Fiat TwinAir Pop Auto, with its tiny (875 cc) twin cylinder engine which is turbo-enhanced and manages to produce all of 62 kW for a claimed top speed of 173 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 11 seconds.

Volkswagen Passat

Passat feature image

With a total lineup of 17 models ranging from small passenger cars, to slightly bigger and then somewhat larger (moving into Jetta territory) there has always been a glaring gap in Volkswagen's attempt to penetrate what one could describe as the "3 Series" segment.

The problem was that the Passat (of which only 19 units were sold in November 2016) sported the usual Volkswagen characteristics - well built, reliable, fairly frugal, and as exciting as watching trees grow.

Dakar final roundup

Dakar peugeot

Convince 359 competitors that the 39th Dakar should be interesting, and even fun, charge them bags full of dollars/euros to join in the fun, and then send the group across three South American countries on a 12-day vehicle and driver-breaking race across deserts, over dunes and often at altitudes ranging from 200 metres to 5,200 metres above sea level - and the enormity of the entire project becomes clear.

Dakar 2017

Dakar peugeot

Rated the hardest off-road race in the world, the Dakar - now in its 39th year - is hosting more than 400 competitors in vehicles ranging from racing trucks to offroad motorcycles, as well as vehicles euphemistically described as cars but which, in reality, are specially converted and purpose-built offroad vehicles, such as the Toyota Gazoo racing Hilux and Peugeot's very unique 3008 DKR (which bears no resemblance to any Peugeot you'll see on a showroom floor).
