5 Action Sports for a New You

Are you tired of the same old mundane routine, week in and week out? Maybe you’re looking for something more than your Wednesday night action cricket game, or your run with the dogs in the park on a Saturday. Is pumping weights getting a little boring, and starting to feel like you’re flogging at a dead horse?

Well fear not my mundane, rut-stricken friend. An adrenaline rush is at hand. Get out of your comfort zone this year, and make sure you try at least one of these activities. You don’t need to be a pro, you don’t need to look good and you don’t even need to get it right. Just try it, dammit!

  1. Surfing

If you live at the coast, you have no excuse for not getting in the water and riding some waves. Initially all it takes is about 500 bucks for a dinged up, yellowish piece of fibreglass and foam to get you riding. Then, youtube the hell out of the how-to-surf videos, or better yet, get someone to help you out  with a few hints and tips. Start off easy by riding some foamys, be patient, and persistent. This sport will change your life and before you know it, you’ll be getting adrenaline fueled barrels like a pro.

  1. Wakeboarding

The key secret here is that you don’t need a boat to go wakeboarding. In Joburg, Cape Town and Warm Baths there are cable parks which have dams and suspended cables that pull you across the water. Rent a wakeboard, wakeskate or kneeboard at the cable park to get your much needed, weekly adrenaline fix. The guys at the parks are super friendly and more than willing to help you get started with some hints and tips.

Check out these spots and make a day of it with your buddies for some good laughs, a few tumbles and the most fun you can have on water without a boat:

  1. Snowboarding

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but winter is only a few months away. The good news though, is that it’s the perfect time to head to Afriski in Lesotho, or Tiffindell in the Southern Drakensberg. Both places offer skiing, snowboarding and bumboarding, as well as great accomodation on the spot. Head out for a weekend, take the morning to learn a few hints and tips from an instructor and then hit the slopes like a pro.

  1. Bungy Jumping

To many people the idea of hurling themselves over the edge of an extremely high structure attached only by a stretchy cord, is enough to send them into a cold sweat. But if you have any inkling to go bungy jumping, make sure you get it done this year. As they say, regret lasts longer than fear and adrenaline is the remedy. Head to Orlando Towers in Soweto or if you’re in the Cape, head to one of the biggest jumps in the world at the Bloukraans bridge. It’s easy, all you have to do is close your eyes and jump!

  1. Skydiving

For whatever reason, some people would rather jump out of an aeroplane with a parachute than off a bridge with a bungy cord. But if this is a more comfortable activity, respect to you. The thrill of flying is hard to beat and, after jumping out of that plane, the adrenaline rush of landing safely back on the ground, is one you will never forget.

Our lives are short and we easily get stuck into a weekly routine, which then turns into a monthly routine. Before we know it the years have slipped by. So make sure you do something that scares the hell out of you this year. It’s great for the soul, makes you feel alive and reminds us that we are mortal beings with a limited time to live this beautiful life. You may even find yourself a new hobby or sport which keeps you going, week in and week out!
