7 Ultimate Movie Villains

Ultimate movie villains | SA Men

From sneaky tricksters and vicious brutes to cold-blooded killers and diabolical masterminds, every good movie deserves an evil villain. After all, bad guys are what make a story worth watching. Without them, the hero wouldn’t have much to do and we’d all be snoozing in our movie seats without any action to keep us entertained. It just goes to show, sometimes it’s good to be bad.

In honour of these super scary bad guys, we’ve put together a list of our favourites who’ve made their mark on movie screens and given our heroes a run for their money.

Warning: there might be a few spoilers in the mix, so read at your own risk.

1.Hannibal Lector - Hannibal

Brilliant, sophisticated and utterly creepy, Hannibal Lecter stakes his claim as one of the most memorable villains in movie history. From his iconic leather muzzle and the disturbing mind games he plays with Clarice Starling to his grisly food and wine pairings, Lecter is as intriguing as he is bone-chillingly sinister. We’ll never look at liver dishes the same way again.

2.Darth Vader – Star Wars

No list of villains would be complete without the iconically evil Darth Vader. Of course, it goes without saying that we’re only talking about the original trilogy, since Anakin Skywalker isn’t quite the sinister Sith lord we’ve come to know and love. With his menacing black helmet and wheezing death rattle, this power hungry and ruthless evil overlord Imperial Marches his way through the Galaxy, cutting down anyone and everything in his path (including his son’s hand) to achieve total domination of the Empire.

3.The Joker – The Dark Knight

Some people just want to watch the world burn. Unlike other bad guys, the Joker isn’t driven by greed or power. There’s no method to his madness. No one really knows who he is, what he wants or why he does anything really. He robs banks and blows stuff up. He burns piles of money, organises elaborate and deadly pranks, and gives Batman a really hard time in general. His only goal seems to be to cause chaos. And he does a damn good job of it.

The Terminator, played by übermensch Arnold Schwarzenegger, is Skynet’s original evil robo baddie. Even though he’s replaced by the shape-changing T-1000 in the second movie, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator T-800 brings out the big guns in his quest to hunt down and assassinate Sarah Connor and her unborn son, John Connor. Superhuman strength, an unstoppable hyperalloy endoskeleton and seemingly endless supply of ammo make this one villain you do not want to mess with.

5.Scar – The Lion King

Taking his cue from the malicious King Claudius in Shakespeare’s famous play Hamlet, Scar is by far Disney’s cruellest villain. Devilishly charming yet cruel to the core, Scar is responsible for many a traumatised child wailing at the brutal murder of Mufasa in a stampede as poor little Simba watches in horror. Scar just goes to show that animated villains can be just as evil as their human counterparts.

6.Keyser Söze – The Usual Suspects

Not all villains are openly treacherous. Sometimes it’s the silent ones who are deadliest. Roger ‘Verbal’ Kint comes across as a mild-mannered guy, but beneath lies a brilliant mastermind responsible for a spate of brutal killings. He spins a convincing lie to the cops about a mysterious mob boss names Keyser Söze who terrorises the criminal underworld in a complicated plot of kidnapping, torture and murder. Afterwards, he waltzes out of the police station, losing his characteristic limps and gets away scot free. Who is Keyser Söze? He’s one badass villain that’s who.

7.Ernst Stavro Blofeld –James Bond Series

Evil genius and archenemy of 007, Blofeld has etched his way into our minds as the ultimate Bond supervillain. From his trademark white cat and giant volcano lair to a deadly diamond-studded satellite and never-ending supply of henchmen, Blofeld has set the bar for pretty much every megalomaniacal world dominator to follow.

King Joffrey Baratheon – Game of Thrones

He might not be a movie villain per se, but King Joffrey from Game of Thrones most definitely deserves a spot on this list. As a murderous despot with zero empathy and a sadistic streak that goes all the way to his core, Joffrey Baratheon is one psychopath we all love to hate.  Off with his head!
